Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) Red and Infrared light therapy pads are evolving as an excellent valid treatment for chronic pain and Inflammatory conditions.
Red and Infrared light is known as Photobiomodulation (PBM).
PBMT is the application of light to the skin and research has proven there is a change in the tissue at a cellular level. Photo is light, bio is tissue, and the effect is to modulate (alter) cell activity. Scientific Research reports positive effects for:
Red infrared light application is safe, the effect is cumulative, with no reported side effects.
Red light (620nm to 750nm) is highly absorbed by the skin, melanin, and haemoglobin. Red light is reported in the research to promote cell growth, wound healing, and scar tissue repair.
Near Infrared light (invisible light 800 nm to 1000nm) wavelengths penetrate deeper into the dermal layer. Infra Red light delivers energy to the cell’s, stimulating the mitochondria to produce ATP and vasodilatation. The cellular reaction to the infra red light increases cell permeability, nerve regeneration and inflammatory changes.
Red Light and Infrared light Therapy in combination has a synergistic effect to activate the Cytochrome C Oxidase chromophobes and this sets off the reaction within the cell to produce ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). ATP is the bodies energy source. ATP is the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells to provide energy for a range of cellular responses and mechanisms.
PBM via Redlight and near infra redlight are being applied to many conditions across the medical field to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, clear infection, stimulate blood and nerve growth.
PBM therapy is reported as safe effective, accumulative with no side effects. Devices are safe and effective on animals and humans.
PBMT is applied via Therapy pads, Panels, a Handheld Laser, or a panel. PBMT is effective for humans and animals. PBMT has been and is extensively researched. There are strong evidence-based peer-reviewed studies to suggest red light and infra red light are effective in improving general health and well being.
Further to this, research has proven PBMT is effective for reducing pain and inflammation, and promotes tissue repair and regeneration. PBMT is safe, there are no reported side effects but there are contraindicaions and care must be taken when appyling this therapy.
PBMT is applied via Lasers, or via LEDS. Lasers are for professional use only and require the use of safety goggles for eye protection.
There are numerous standard pads/panels/torches with pre-set wavelengths (660nm and 850nm) and are available in various sizes.
Very few devices offer alternative wavelengths.
Research recommends the ideal depth for changing cell activity is from 600nm to 1000nm. The redlight is high energy and shallow penetrating and highly absorbed into the melanin and Hemoglobin chromophores. The infra redlight at deeper wavelengths is highly absorbed into the cytochrome c oxidase chromophore, activating a cellular respone in the tissues. The longer infra red wavelengths penetrate even further into the tissue and activate water as the main chomophore, intiating a thermal affect in the cells.
The primary action for PBMT is to apply red and infra red light that delivers energy to the cell’s, stimulating the mitochondria to produce ATP and vasodilatation.

Contraindications
To be avoided in pregnant uterus and active cancers. It is unknown what red light can do to these conditions and is therefore contraindicated.
Selecting a device is determined on ease of use, wavelengths offered for specific effect. Animal and human devices are interchangeable.

As well as standard pads I have customised redlight physiotherapy pads and devices to my own design. These are customised to penetrate deeper into tissue with maximum absornption of light based on current research.All devices are CE,RoHS and FCC approved and tested for quality.
In conjunction with correct biomechanical movement patterns and core stability training chronic pain can be well managed. All pads are labelled veterinary pads for animal use. New designs are being built to stay up with new research.
